Medicare “Doughnut Hole” to Close with New Legislation
AARP supports the new healthcare legislation saying it “would get us closer to abolishing discriminatory insurance market practices that use a person’s age to block access to health coverage or keep prices too high to make a difference.”
The new legislation addresses two critical priorities for millions of Americans who depend on Medicare. First, it helps Medicare beneficiaries who have fallen into the doughnut hole to pay for prescriptions this year with a $250 rebate, and it is projected to close the doughnut hole by 2019.
It also addresses the unsustainable system that Medicare uses to pay doctors, helps protect patients’ access to their doctors, and puts Medicare on a path to fiscal stability. While Medicare benefits were in doubt in just eight short years, the new legislation is projected to extend Medicare by nearly a decade.
Medicare Supplemental Insurance or Medigap Plans are also designed to close the gaps in the original Medicare benefits. These plans are available to anyone who is enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. For the first six months after you turn 65, you can enroll in a Medigap Plan without answering any questions about your medical history. This is called an open enrollment period.
