How and When to Switch Medicare Supplement Plans

How and When to Switch

Find a Better-Priced Medicare Supplement Plan, or Switch from Your Medicare Advantage to a Medigap Plan

If your premiums have gone up or you do not like your Medicare Advantage plan, you should consider switching to a new Medigap plan.

If it is your first time in a Medicare Advantage plan, and it is within the first year of joining, you can generally* switch without having to worry about being excluded due to pre-existing health problems. You also have guaranteed issue rights* if the company you were covered with went out of business or stopped offering that plan.

Another opportunity to leave a Medicare Advantage Plan is through Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Periods. *This is a time when you can obtain a Supplement Plan if you are dissatisfied with an Advantage Plan.

State-specific Open Enrollment Periods

In some states, you can change plans at certain times without going through underwriting.

California – Annual open enrollment period lasts only 60 days, beginning 30 days before and ending 30 days after your birthday.  If you want to change your policy you can do so within 30 days following your birthday without being denied.

Connecticut – Year-round open enrollment.

Maine – Annual open enrollment period every June, for Plan A only.  You may also change from one Medicare Supplement plan to another of equal or lesser benefits within 90 days.

Missouri – You can switch to the same plan with another company within 30 days of the annual policy anniversary date.

Washington – You can usually change from one plan to another.

Otherwise, your application will have to be approved by the insurance company. People with well-controlled diabetes or hypertension are usually accepted. But if you have any serious health problems, such as emphysema, AIDS, or osteoporosis with fractures, your application will be declined.
