I’m grateful for the confidence and trust my clients have given me over the years. In thirty-five years of working with people who are retired or about to be retired, there is one common theme: will I outlive my money? Some things don’t change. If I want to be remembered by anything in life, it’s that I worked hard, played hard, and overall tried to do what was right and followed through on what I said I would do.

One of the things I’m most proud of is that I was able to see my daughter Erin graduate from the Fashion Institute in New York City. One drawback is that she loves living there so much she probably won’t move back home. Another accomplishment I am also grateful for is that I was able to sell my financial planning business at fifty-nine to another advisor ten years younger than myself.

I retired and followed my interests in motorcycle riding by becoming an instructor for several motorcycle schools here in Colorado. Over time I’ve realized I missed working with people and helping them become financially secure, so I called Wiley and asked if he had a need for my experience. Now, I’m at MediGap Advisors, and I’m excited to be working alongside Wiley, the president of MediGap Advisors, and all the people here.

Some Things Stay with You

Early on in a financial planning career, you don’t really know the impact you’re going to have on someone’s life.

One thing that comes to mind was when I insured a husband who maintained he did not need insurance but reluctantly purchased a term policy. He eventually got really ill and was admitted to the hospital. His premium was coming due and he was in his 30-day grace period. My assistant and I called his spouse and asked for her to come by the office to drop off the premium.

For whatever reason, his wife was not responding to coming into the office. His $500,000 life insurance policy was about to lapse. She finally came in and paid the policy premium. Unfortunately, just a few days later, he died. She hasn’t had to worry about money ever since, providing her security and comfort in her retirement years.

Another example was when I was referred by a CPA to the president of a corporation who refused key person disability coverage. The president’s attorney also advised him that it wasn’t a good idea, but I showed him how important it was for the viability of the company, so they proceeded with the coverage. We eventually set it up as a qualified sick pay plan.

Within 7 months, the president was diagnosed with an aggressive form of multiple sclerosis. The tax-free income he and his family received from those policies allowed them to live in dignity.

My Personal Life

My wife (Sally) and me

Our Schnauzer and Havanese pets

I grew up in New Jersey and North Carolina. Now, I live in Fort Collins, Colorado and part-time in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, mostly in the winter, because of the awesome powder skiing. My wife Sally is a physical therapist who works with the elderly at a nursing home, specializing in stroke, hip, knee and other therapies so these grateful patients can eventually go home.

We have two dogs, a Schnauzer and a Havanese. We’ve had four at one time, and when they passed, it was another reminder that we are all only here for a short time and that we need to be careful not to waste time on things that don’t really matter.

Hobbies

Abate of Colorado

With my bicycle

Some of my hobbies include golf, skiing, cycling, motorcycling, and traveling. A few of my goals are to travel to eastern Europe, bike Patagonia, ski in Chile and live part time in the winter where its warmer than Colorado. Our ideas of what we want and where we live change with time.

I am involved in the motorcycle community. I’m part of a safety group called Abate of Colorado whose goal is to advocate for motorcyclists and their safety.

Also, I am an enthusiastic bicyclist. Though intermediate ability, I once rode 435 miles on my bicycle, covering in excess of 23,000 vertical feet in 6 days. I’m planning to do another Ride the Rockies event in June of this year.

I also play pool in a league, where our team has won our division the last 4 years, but we haven’t been to Las Vegas for the finals yet. Hopefully, we will this year.
