When Are Medicare Advantage Plans Better Than Medigap Insurance?

Medigap Plans are guaranteed issue for the first six months after you turn 65, but you could have trouble getting Medigap Insurance after that. Beyond that six-month window, insurers are allowed to question you about medical issues to uncover any pre-existing conditions.

If you can’t get a Medigap Plan due to a pre-existing condition, Medicare Advantage plans are your best bet. These plans cover all pre-existing health problems except for End Stage Renal Disease.

The premiums on Medicare Advantage Plans can be extremely low, too, and they may have more coverage than Original Medicare. Many of these plans restrict the selection of doctors you can see when you don’t need care on an emergency basis, though.

Because Medicare Advantage Plans have different rules depending on which company offers them, you’ll need to read your plan’s policy carefully. Even the prescriptions that are covered may vary from insurer to insurer.
