Do you have a Medigap plan to help reduce your out-of-pocket costs wth Medicare? If your answer is yes, you might want to consider adding a Medicare Part D plan to help with your prescription costs. Prescriptions are one of the biggest expenses for seniors.
Medicare’s prescription drug program is called Medicare Part D and it is offered by private insurance companies. These companies and the various prescription plans that they make available are approved by Medicare.
Even though the plans must comply with Medicare’s rules, the insurance companies can have different premiums, co-pays and out-of-pocket expenses on each plan. If you have original Medicare, you can enroll in a stand-alone Part D Prescription plan and a Medicare Supplement plan. Many Medicare Advantage plans include Medicare Part A, B and D coverage in one package.
Not all prescriptions are covered by Part D. Several categories of drugs are completely excluded under Medicare. These include drugs for weight loss or weight gain, drugs for treating erectile dysfunction, drugs to treat the common cold, as well as barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and prescription vitamins.
