Medicare Covers Procedures that Can Detect Cancer

Although colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer, it is also the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. In an effort to reduce this tragedy, March has been dubbed National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

The screening options used to detect colorectal cancer include colonoscopy, and flexible sigmoidoscopy. If you have Medicare, it will pay from 75 to 80 percent of the cost for these procedures.

Medicare will cover a colonoscopy once every two years if you have had colorectal polyps or colorectal cancer, have a family history of colorectal cancer, or have inflammatory bowel disease. Otherwise, Medicare will cover a colonoscopy once every ten years, but not within four years of a flexible sigmoidoscopy. There is no minimum age requirement for Medicare to cover colonoscopy.

If you are at least 50, Medicare will cover a flexible sigmoidoscopy once every four years, and Medicare will cover these services without requiring a Part B deductible. Medicare will pay for 80 percent of the cost of a colonoscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy, or 75 percent if these procedures are performed in an ambulatory surgical center or hospital outpatient department.

Medicare Supplement Insurance, or Medigap Insurance, is available if you have Medicare Part A and Part B to cover expenses not covered under Medicare. There is an open enrollment period for the first six months after you turn age 65, in which you do not need to qualify or answer any questions about your medical history.
