Is the fountain of youth really a myth? Research is showing us numerous ways to feel and look happy and healthy in advanced years. Here are five great tips that can help you enjoy life to it’s fullest year after year.
Go out and have fun. Mingle with other people of all ages. Having a variety of people from different age brackets in your social circle can help you feel young. You keep abreast of the new trends by interacting with seniors, “middle-agers,” teenagers, and kids. Studies show that if you spend at least six hours a day of interacting with other people it helps sharpen the mind and improve your mood.
If you love playing golf, find someone who is a notch better than you. This way, you will have the drive to keep up and improve your skills. Watch a movie or engage in social and mind stimulating activities that would make you feel that you’re still at par with people much younger. People usually tend to adopt behaviors from those around them. If you are surrounded by people who don’t want to go out and socialize and are content with a sedentary lifestyle, then you may age faster than normal.
Aside from helping you feel young, it actually helps the body to stay young. Just walking in a park for at least 30 minutes a day, depending on your tolerance, increases your stamina and improves the blood circulation in your body. It also helps lower the incidence of heart disease, diabetes, and depression.
3. Laugh Often.
You’ve probably heard the saying “laughter is the best medicine”, and it could not be more true! It places us in a happy disposition, elevates our moods, and increases endorphin production. When we are happy, it actually reduces stress and development of heart disease.
4. Eat Healthy.
We are what we eat. A lot of diseases develop and people are dying at a young age because they failed to eat “healthy” foods. When I say healthy, I mean a balanced meal with a hefty serving of fruits and veggies and avoiding carcinogenic (cancer-causing) foods. The U.S.D.A., for example, found 67 chemicals on non-organic apples even after a power washing with a special high-pressure water system. Regularly ingesting such unnatural ingredients makes it hard for your body to function.
5. Stay Updated.
Keep up with the technological changes around you. It may help you feel younger. Learning new things keeps the mind sharp and it will keep you attached to the culture and the growing world. Read the newspaper or the Internet to keep updated or watch PBS.
How much of age is an attitude? Embrace change, and you won’t need the fountain of youth. With the right attitude and lifestyle choices, you can feel like a “spring chicken.”
