Switch Medicare Supplement Plans
Find a Better Priced Medicare Supplement Plan, or Switch From Your Medicare Advantage to a Medigap Plan
If your premiums have gone up or you do not like your Medicare Advantage plan, you should consider switching to a new Medigap plan.
If you have had a Medicare Advantage plan for less than a year, you can probably switch without having to worry about being excluded due to pre-existing health problems. You also have guaranteed issue rights if the company you were covered with went out of business or stopped offering that plan.
State-specific Open Enrollment Periods
In some states, you can change plans at certain times without going through underwriting.
Connecticut – Year-round open enrollment Maine – Annual open enrollment period every June, for Plan A only. You may also change from one Medicare Supplement plan to another of equal or lesser benefits. Missouri – You can switch to the same plan with another company within 30 days of the annual policy anniversary date. New York – Year-round open enrollment Vermont - Year-round open enrollment Washington – You can usually change from one plan to another. |
Otherwise, your application will have to be approved by the insurance company. People with well-controlled diabetes or hypertension are usually accepted. But if you have any serious health problems, such as emphysema, AIDS, or osteoporosis with fractures, your application will be declined.
Consider Plan N
If you do have some health conditions, you may want to consider plan N. Some companies have much more liberal underwriting for this plan. In CO, FL, KS, ME, PA, and SD, you are guaranteed to be accepted on this plan unless you have end-stage renal disease.
Choose a Plan and Submit Your Application
You can compare the different plans (plans F and N are the most popular), and you can compare rates between Mutual of Omaha, UnitedHealthcare, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, and many other companies.
