Short-Term Health Insurance

A Low-Cost Option Before Medicare Begins

Many people find themselves without coverage for a period of a few months after retiring or if a prior policy canceled and their Medicare special enrollment period (SEP) has not yet begun.  If you fall into this category, a short-term policy can provide the coverage you need for a very low premium.

Coverage Is Affordable, Flexible and Easy

With a short-term plan, you can choose your policy length based on how long you need it.  You can get coverage for as short a period as one month, up to six or 12 months, depending on the state in which you live.

For an instant quote for your area, simply complete the form below. You can apply in approximately 5 minutes for coverage in place tomorrow!

A short-term health insurance policy is often less than half the cost of a long-term or continuous policy.  This makes it a perfect choice if you are only going to need coverage for a short period while you are waiting for your Medicare eligibility to kick in.

When you apply for a short-term insurance plan, you can often be approved for coverage by the next business day.  However, you do need to remember that a short-term plan will not cover you for some pre-existing conditions, nor does it contain the 10 Essential Benefits as mandated under the Affordable Care Act.  Additionally, you will not have the preventive medicine coverage that an ACA plan offers.

What Do Short-Term Plans Cover?

Short-term plans are designed to cover unexpected illnesses or accidents, with limited benefits otherwise.  You can compare plans and coverage to make sure you are getting the plan that is best for you and your family.

Although short-term plans do not contain the 10 Essential Benefits of an Affordable Care Act plan, they do cover both outpatient and inpatient hospital services, X-rays and other imaging ordered by a doctor, and charges billed by a doctor or specialist for a covered illness or injury.  Visit this Benefits Details page for a more-comprehensive list of covered benefits.

You can choose from deductibles (the amount you pay before coverage begins) of $250, $500, $1,000, $2,500, $5,000 or $7,500.  For urgent care, the deductible is waived and you only pay $50.

The plan will then pay either 80 percent or 50 percent of the next $5,000.  After that it pays 100 percent of covered expenses, up to $2 million.  You can go to the doctor or hospital of your choice with no worry about whether your doctor participates in a particular network.

How to Get a Quote and Get Signed Up

Health Insurance Innovations (HII) offers the most-competitive rates for short-term policies.  There is a wide variety of plans available, with different coverage levels and your choice of deductible amounts.

You can obtain an instant quote and apply online with a few simple clicks of your mouse!

  • Click the Instant Quote Link
  • Click the blue “Click to Quote and Apply” button in the right-hand corner.  Enter the date you want your coverage to begin.
  • Enter your state, birthdate, gender and dependent information.

Based on the information you provide, you will be shown the plans available in your area.  These quotes automatically include additional benefits of dental and vision coverage.  If you do not want dental or vision coverage, do the following:

  • On the left-hand side, you will see "Available Options" boxes.
  • Check ‘no’ in the box for each option you do not want to include in your coverage.

The price of the plans offered will change accordingly.

  • You will see plan options for various deductible options.
  • The premiums for these short-term plans include a one-time $60 fee
  • If you choose "monthly payment" there will be a small monthly service charge included in the cost.

Once you have chosen your plan and decided how long you need coverage for, you can apply for coverage online.

  • Click the blue “Apply Now” button underneath the plan you choose.
  • You will be asked five questions you need to answer to be approved.
  • Complete the online personal information form.
  • Complete the online billing information form.

You can pay monthly using your credit or debit card, or you can choose to pay your premium in full.  Paying in full is an excellent option if you know you only need the coverage for a set period of time.  When you pay in full, you pay slightly less, as you are not charged the monthly service charges.  Either way you pay, however, coverage can begin almost immediately.

If you need assistance, give us a call to discuss your health insurance options and let us help you decide which short-term plan will provide the benefits you need at a price you can afford.

We can be reached at 800-913-3416, or you can have your questions answered by using our contact form.  Our services are entirely free—we are happy to help you with all of your insurance needs!
